Volkswagen Arena

Volkswagen Arena

Due to UEFA sponsorship regulations, the Volkswagen Arena is sometimes referred as the Vfl Wolfsburg Arena. When the arena’s Bundesliga home team VfL Wolfsburg was promoted to the league, automotive company Volkswagen Group reinforced its commitment to the club. It officially opened on December 2002 as a football site and was dubbed by the media and local magazines as the “temple with a glass facade”. The translucent membrane of the entire establishment aims to improve the atmosphere for football matches and support the natural growth of the grass pitch.

The home team VfL Wolfsburg became the first Bundesliga club to play in an LED-lit stadium when the arena was equipped with a new LED floodlight system in 2017. Unfortunately, the first and only international match of the team in their home ground was held on June 2003 when they defeated the Canadian national football team with a final score of 4-1.
