Metropolitano Stadium also acknowledged as Wanda Metropolitano for sponsorship reasons is a stadium located in Madrid, Spain. It is the home stadium of Atletico Madrid and has been since the 2017/18 season.
The stadium was built as part of an unsuccessful bid to host the 1997 World Athletics Championships and opened on September 1994 by the Community of Madrid. Shortly after, it closed in 2004 due to the city’s bid for the 2016 Olympics. In 2013, it was handed to Atletico Madrid, who played their first match in the stadium on September 2017. Before closing its doors, the stadium was only capable of holding 20,000 spectators. This expanded to 67,703 upon re-opening. The Metropolitano stadium is set to host the 2019 UEFA Champions League Final.
Some of the notable matches recently held in the stadium include an international friendly match between Spain and Argentina and the 2018 Copa del Ray Final between Sevilla and Barcelona.
