The 2018/2019 season marks the 99th season of the National Football League (NFL)–just a year away from marking its centennial season. It was clearly a huge accomplishment for many since the entire league started from a humble past; in fact, the football community considers the NFL as the greatest success story in the history of American sports.

The NFL, previously called as the American Football Association (APFA), was a struggling federation of Ohio-football clubs 99 years ago, none of its pioneers could afford to pay a nominal franchise fee to continue operating. But with the help of other football organizations, APFA merged with the American Football League (AFL) to establish the NFL and introduce the inaugural season of the Super Bowl. At present, the NFL is one of the four major professional leagues in North America and the highest professional level of football in the world.

After years of operating, the NFL became an unavoidable presence in American popular culture. United by one common passion, millions of fans today come together from early September to late December to witness its matches. In actuality, the latest audience delivery metric of the NFL produces over 20 million viewers every year.

From September 6 of every year, the NFL hosts a 17-week regular season. The total number of participating teams today is 32, all of which hail from the United States. Each team plays 16 games and one bye week for the start of the season, followed by 6 teams from division winners and wild card teams advancing to the playoffs with a single-elimination tournament culminating in the Super Bowl. This tournament format is divided into three: the preseason, regular season, and postseason.

Since the official start of the league, the teams currently dominating the NFL win-loss records and titles are the Green Bay Packers (13-5), Chicago Bears (9-10), New York Giants (8-14), Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2), Dallas Cowboys (5-3), and San Francisco 49ers (5-1). The latest champion defending their title next year is Philadelphia Eagles.
