The Los Angeles Chargers are based in the Greater Los Angeles Area and competes in the NFL as part of the American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was instituted in August 1959 and first played in the 1960 season of the American Football League. One year after, the team moved to San Diego to become the San Diego Chargers. The Chargers then joined the NFL after the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. As of 2017, the Chargers returned to Los Angeles, just one year after the Rams headed back to the city from St. Louis.
During their time in the AFL, the Chargers won one title in 1963 appeared in five AFL playoff games and the AFL Championship four times. Following the AFL-NFL merger, the Chargers took part in 13 playoffs and four AFC Championship game appearances. The Chargers won their only AFC Championship in 1994 and was pitted against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX, losing the game 49-26.
