Real Sociedad de Fútbol, also referred to as Real Sociedad, is a San Sebastian-based club. It was founded in September 1904 by students and workers returning from Britain but was first called the San Sebastian Recreation Club. The club is part of the founder members of La Liga in 1929. Real Sociedad’s longest spell in the top division happened from 1967 to 2007.
In 1909, members applied to enter the Copa de Ray but faced difficulties over registration permits. Out of the complications, the Sociedad de Futbol was formed on September 1909. Another event led to the team changing names one again to Donostia Club de Futbol in 1931 due to the Second Spanish Republic but changed back to Real Sociedad after the Spanish Civil War in 1939.
Real Sociedad’s name translates to “Royal Society of Football” in Spanish. The club is nicknamed Erreala (The Royal) or the txuri-urdin (white-blue) due to the colors of their kit, which stem from the flag of San Sebastian: a blue canton on a white field.
