Levante Unión Deportiva, S.A.D. is a Valencia-based club founded on September 1909. Levante UD was previously registered as Levante Football Club, drawing its name from the Levante beach in la Malvarrosa. It is one of the first clubs to be established in Valencia, preceding local rivals Valencia CF and Cabanyal FC.
During the Civil War, Levante’s ground was destroyed while nearby club Gimnastico had a ground, but had lost most of their players. The two clubs decided to merge in 1930 to become Unión Deportiva Levante-Gimnástico, changing two years later to Levante Unión Deportiva.
Levante’s first achievement came by the Valencian Championship. However, the club had to wait until the 1960s to make its first La Liga appearance. Levante UD finished runner-up in Group II of the second division, rewarding the club with the promotion. After erratic performances, the club moved back and forth the second and third divisions with numerous La Liga stints in between. The club was promoted back to the first league in 2017/17, winning the second division title.
