Athletic Club, also known as Athletic Bilbao, is a Bilbao-based club in Spain. They are nicknamed The Lions because their home stadium stands next to a church called the Saint Mammes, which was an early Christian thrown to the lions by the Romans. The club wears shirts with red and white vertical stripes as their home colors and blue kits for the away colors.
The club is one of three founding members of the Primera Division that have never seen the light of the second division since the top division’s establishment in 1929. Some of the Athletic Bilbao’s achievements include eight La Liga titles and 24 Copa del Rey titles.
One of the unique traits of the club is its policy for bringing young Basque players and recruiting players from other Basque clubs. Athletic’s main rivals are Real Sociedad, against whom the play the Basque derby. Another contesting club is Real Madrid, due to several sporting and political rivalry.
