Verein für Leibesübungen Wolfsburg e. V., or VfL Wolfsburg, is a German Bundesliga club based in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony. The club expanded out of a multi-sports club for car manufacturer Volkswagen workers in the city of Wolfsburg. The club is best known for its football program, but also offers other departments such as badminton, handball, and athletics. Wolfsburg plays home matches at the Volkswagen arena after moving from the VfL – Stadium in 2002.
The men’s professional team play in the top tier of the German football league system.
Wolfsburg has its share of ups and downs, with its lows falling to the second and third division division. The club made slow progress in the following seasons, but was able to advance back to the Bundesliga after its long absence in the top-flight in 1997. Through the course of the club’s history, Wolfsburg has won the Bundesliga once, during the 2008/09 campaign.
