Bayer 04 Leverkusen, also recognized as Bayer Leverkusen, Leverkusen, or Bayer, is a Leverkusen-based Bundesliga club. Located in North Rhine-Westphalia, the club plays in the top tier of the German football league system. The team hosts home matches at the BayArena, and has been their home ground since 1958 up to this day. The club’s trophy case includes a DFB-Pokal and a UEFA Cup title. Their local rivals are 1. FC Koln.
Founded in 1904 by employees of the German pharmaceutical company Bayer, headquartered in Leverkusen and from which the club takes its name. It was previously the highly-recognized department of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen, a sports club that features athletes who participate in basketball, athletics, and other sports. In 1999, the football department segregated from the sports club and was called Bayer 04 Leverkusen GmbH.
Bayer currently sports black and red home kits, white away colors, and sky blue third colors. The first kit was taken from the club’s traditional colors, while the current third blue kit pays homage to the club’s gymnastics team then.
